Removing The Old Barn

This year we have finally gotten to the point where we can do some work on the other buildings on our property.  The first thing that needed to be done was to tear down the old barn.  At first we had hoped that we could restore it, but after a thorough inspection, we discovered that the basic structure and foundation were in pretty bad shape so it would have to go.  We also had a lot of old concrete foundations that we wanted to get rid of.  We did some checking and found someone who could do it all.  They suggested that the easiest way was to dig a bit hole and put all the old concrete in it.  The old barn would also be pushed in and then burned.

Here you see a picture of the old barn.  Like the house, it had a number of additions and changes made to it over the years.

                                      going . . . . .
                                                              well, it's almost gone.
It was too windy to do the actual burning, and the bulldozer operator said that when he was digging the hole, he got down to a point where the ground was too wet for him to continue without getting stuck.  So we now have to wait for the head honcho to come out and decide on weather or not the whole is deep enough before they can continue.  And since the 4th is almost here, I have a feeling that it is going to be at least a week before anything more happens here.

07-05-2010 The demolition continues . . . .

Here they have started pushing the demolished barn into the hole and have set it on fire.  As the fire burns down, they will continue to add more of the old wood until it is all in the hole.

Once all the wood was in the hole and burning, they then broke that up the old foundation.  Once the fire was burned down, they then pushed the broken up concrete in on top of it and started filling the hole.

                                                                                     . . . . . Gone
Now we get to go around and pick up all the smaller pieces of concrete and other
debris that are lying about and toss them in a second hole that they dug for us.  eventually they will come out and fill in the last hole and finish smoothing down and compacting the areas that have been worked.  When this is done, we can start working on the next phase.
